Northern Malta

Towns in Northern Areas

Malta’s sandy beaches are mainly found on the northern side of the islands. Apart from the popular beaches, there is also a multitude of deserted coves and little beaches sometimes only accessible by sea. Although many are small, they are some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Beach activities range from relaxing in the sun to scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, and beach volley.

The swimming and sunbathing season starts in April when the weather becomes much warmer. Temperatures can reach around 28°C to 35°C, then gradually cool down until the end of October.

Mgarr is a rural farming village known for its restaurants selling traditional rabbit stew. This village is particularly beautiful for its blend of different coloured fields and its coastline.

Adjacent to Mgarr is the town of Mellieha, a tourist destination with fantastic beaches and plenty of restaurants. For those who prefer to enjoy the natural beauty of the countryside, Mellieha is a popular location for nature walks. The Majjistral Nature & History Park is an area of protected coast dedicated to nature conservation. The organisation holds outdoor events such as guided walks, olive-picking, and kayaking.
