History

Mellieħa has a long history, dating back to Neolithic times when the first inhabitants lived in naturally formed caves in the area. These early settlers left behind a number of megalithic remnants, including the Ghajn Zejtuna temple, as well as caves and graves containing tools and pottery pieces. These cave villages survived during Byzantine rule but were abandoned in the early Middle Ages.

By 1436, Mellieha was one of the ten parishes of Malta. However, it was abandoned soon afterward due to raids by Muslim corsairs. The fortifications along the northern coast of Malta were built in the early 17th century in response to these raids. It was an important strategic location during World War II, and today it is a popular holiday destination for tourists from all over Europe.

The fare for a standard ticket can be around €1.5, but if you plan on using public transport regularly, you can opt for a monthly pass of €26.

If you have a car, you need to consider parking. Mellieħa is a relatively quiet area, which makes driving and parking relatively easy. However, during the peak tourist season, it can be difficult to find a spot to park your car. Fortunately, taking a taxi is always a viable choice, with the standard fare being somewhere between 4 to 8 euros.

Or, if you want to try some local dishes, be sure to give Commando a chance. The seasonal menu at Commando draws on what the local market offers and is best described as modern Mediterranean cuisine, specializing mainly in fresh fish and seafood.
